Global Carbon Pricing Challenge announces COP28 Events, Launches new website

The Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC) announced plans today for two major events at COP28 in Dubai, marking an important step-change in the Challenge’s work and firmly placing it on the international environmental and climate agenda.

At COP28, carbon-pricing leaders and experts from a growing number of GCPC Partners and Friends – Canada, Chile, Côte d’Ivoire, Denmark, Germany, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the newest Partner, the European Union – will come together to showcase progress on carbon pricing, and discuss ways to strengthen emerging pricing systems, with a focus on developing countries.

Building on the official GCPC launch at COP27 by Canada and Chile, and a successful high-level event chaired by Prime Minister Trudeau at the United Nations Climate Week in September 2023, COP28 will act as a venue for the GCPC to further elevate the profile and potential of carbon pricing as a powerful tool for climate action.

Canada’s Ambassador for Climate Change, Catherine Stewart, said:

“The Global Carbon Pricing Challenge continues to evolve and grow, and is now firmly part of the global climate action agenda. Guided by a growing number of Challenge Partners and Friends, this new initiative will help advance and amplify our collective carbon pricing efforts through Leader-level cooperation, best practice exchanges, technical support, and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. Carbon pricing and cross-border cooperation are essential ingredients in helping achieve Paris Agreement goals – and we look forward to showcasing the Challenge while continuing dialogue with a shared focus at COP28.”

On Wednesday, December 6, technical experts will gather in the IETA Pavilion at 18:00 for the ‘Global Carbon Pricing Challenge Exchange: Lessons Learned Implementing Carbon Pricing.’ Representatives will share their first-hand experiences implementing or considering carbon pricing policies and underscore the value of exchanging technical advice and lessons learned at every stage of the process.

And on Sunday, December 10 at 17:30, GCPC Partners and Friends will host a ministerial-level event in the Canada Pavilion under the theme of ‘Driving Change.’ Canada’s Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault alongside high-profile speakers, including ministers and leaders from international organizations will have an in-depth discussion about the important influence and impact of carbon pricing on global climate and economic policy, highlighting challenges and opportunities in the implementation of explicit carbon pricing systems.
