< Back to News

  • Finland, Nigeria and Uruguay become the latest countries to join the Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC), highlighting their commitment to carbon pricing mechanisms in the fight against climate change.

  • GCPC members to joined forces at COP29 in Baku to showcase global collaboration and share lessons learned on carbon pricing implementation.

In a notable advancement for global cooperation on carbon pricing, Finland and Uruguay have officially joined the Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC) as Partners, while Nigeria has come on board as a Friend. This expansion underscores these countries' commitment to ambitious climate action and support for effective carbon pricing mechanisms that facilitate the transition to low-carbon economies.

The announcement comes following a high-level discussion at COP29, bringing together senior officials from new and existing GCPC Partners and Friends, as well as from a diverse range of countries interested in carbon pricing. Representatives from the European Commission, Germany, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, the UK, and Uruguay, as well as from the International Energy Agency, DG CLIMA and the World Bank discussed the critical role that carbon markets can play in developing economies and how the GCPC is supporting emerging carbon pricing policies. Canada’s Ambassador for Climate Change, Catherine Stewart, hosted the event in the Canada Pavilion on November 18.

This event reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts and knowledge sharing in expanding carbon pricing. As Finland, Nigeria, and Uruguay join the GCPC, they aim to leverage the shared experiences of these countries to enhance their own carbon pricing frameworks, effectively integrating innovative strategies into their national policies.

Tomorrow, [November 19], the GCPC will host another event at COP29 delving into the varieties of carbon pricing whilst sharing insights on carbon pricing and its adjustment to local contexts. Speakers from the UK, New Zealand, and Denmark will join this event.

The Global Carbon Pricing Challenge continues to pave the way for countries to collaborate and advance innovative approaches to carbon pricing, promoting the global transition toward a more sustainable future.
