On Monday, November 18th, the Government of Canada hosted an event at COP29 to showcase the work of the Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC) since its creation at COP26. This event provided an opportunity for ministers and senior officials from both existing and new GCPC Partners and Friends to share their valuable insights. Attendees engaged in discussions about the vital role of carbon pricing in developing economies, while highlighting the GCPC’s efforts to support emerging carbon pricing policies, underscoring the growing momentum and diverse global voices rallying behind this critical initiative.
Among the highlights, Finland, Nigeria, and Uruguay were announced as the latest countries to join the GCPC, signalling their robust commitment to carbon pricing. The session, hosted by Catherine Stewart, Canada’s Ambassador for Climate Change and Chair of the GCPC Advisory Committee, featured keynote addresses from influential speakers, including Robert Habeck, Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action from Germany; Rachel Kyte, UK Special Representative on Climate; and Mary Burce Warlick, Deputy Executive Director of the International Energy Agency. It also included a panel discussion, moderated by Jennifer Sara, Global Director of the World Bank Group’s Global Climate Change Practice, between Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, Director-General and CEO of the National Council on Climate Change (Nigeria); Kurt Vandenberghe, Director General of the Directorate-General for Climate Action (European Commission); Shattyk Tastemirova, Head of the Adaptation to Climate Change Unit (Kazakhstan); and Mariana Baubeta of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Uruguay). These high-level discussions emphasized the importance of global coordination in carbon pricing initiatives, reflecting the collective ambition to combat climate change effectively.
