The global landscape of carbon pricing policies is expanding in scope and diversity. By 2024, jurisdictions from all continents have adopted a total of 75 carbon pricing policies, jointly covering about 24% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Recent years have seen a shift towards increasingly diverse policy designs, tailored to the local circumstances of individual countries and jurisdictions. This includes the growing popularity of 'hybrid' systems that combine different carbon pricing instruments, such as a carbon tax and a domestic crediting mechanism.
During this side event representatives from a variety of countries will share insights into their carbon pricing instrument design and lessons learned from the process of adjusting their policy to local contexts. Participants will cover emissions trading and carbon taxes in diverse sectors and across different geographies.
